Fenna van Loenhout from Nu.nl spoke with Project AWeSoMe post-doctoral researcher Rebecca Godrad about harmful content on the TikTok feeds of Dutch adolescents. Preliminary findings suggest that nearly all youth from a community-based sample encounter suicide-related content on TikTok: among the approximately 45,000 mental health-related videos identified, around 3,000 contained content explicitly endorsing or encouraging suicide. While most see this content rarely, a few users encounter it very frequently.
Suicide-related content is also a diverse category. While it causes immense harm in some cases, it may also play a powerful role in spreading suicide prevention messages and resources.
