Improving Participation In Data Donation Studies

A new article by Yucan Xiong, Amber van der Wal, and Ine Beyens in Social Science Computer Review sheds fresh light on what drives and discourages participation in data donation research.

Their systematic review brings together the existing evidence on the main forces shaping participation: data sensitivity, privacy worries, autonomy, and the sheer complexity of the donation process. The takeaway is that concerns about sensitive data and privacy remain major roadblocks. At the same time, giving participants real autonomy and making the process simple are key to getting them on board.

The resulting evidence-based recommendations are: transparent communication, strong privacy safeguards, and user-friendly procedures all help boost engagement and build trust.

For researchers and organizations designing data donation studies, this review is a practical roadmap, helping them create studies that participants feel confident joining. For the full picture, you can access the article here.
